The Alexandre Grendene Square, situated in the heart of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia hospital complex in Porto Alegre, arises from the desire to redefine the emptiness between buildings, transforming the space into a place of welcome and respite. Based on the principles of biophilia, the project incorporates dense vegetation, organic pathways, and spaces for permanence as therapeutic devices. The square proposes a garden with multiple vegetative layers that create microenvironments of thermal, visual, and emotional comfort, promoting meaningful pauses amid the hospital routine and welcoming different forms of presence. The visual and sensory contact with greenery acts as an emotional mediator, capable of reducing stress, regulating the internal rhythm, and favoring healing.

Classic studies, such as those by Roger Ulrich, demonstrate that patients with a view of nature have faster recovery rates, highlighting the restorative power of green spaces. This same logic extends to healthcare professionals: providing contact with nature is also about caring for those who care. Thus, by integrating vegetation, pathways, and spaces for staying, the project reconstructs the hospital experience from the sensory perspective - where the landscape is not an ornament, but the protagonist of care.
